Modern smartphones support data transfer via Wi-Fi and mobile network. But not all of them work the same way: some better, some worse. Today we will find out what are the best smartphones for Internet.

Best Wi-Fi standard for smartphone

Budget smartphones often do not have support for new Wi-Fi standards, which are more advanced and fast (for example, 802.11n and 802.11ac). Such devices cannot get a place in the list of the best smartphones for Internet. The first condition for getting a smartphone in our list below is mandatory support networks Wi-Fi 802.11n and 802.11ac versions.

There is also a high-speed standard 802.11ad (known as WiGig), operating at a frequency near 60 GHz. But there are no devices with its support yet.

Best data standard for mobile networks – LTE-Advanced

Many inexpensive smartphones are not able to operate in LTE mobile networks, in which data transmission is faster than in 2G and 3G networks. Formally LTE standard provides data transfer rates up to 100 Mb / s and receiving 40 Mb / s.

LTE-Advanced is available in several versions with different speeds. The most common categories of LTE-A are:

  • 4 – 150/50 Mbit / s;
  • 6 – 300/50 Mbit / s;
  • 7 – 300/100 Mbit / s;
  • 9 – 450/50 Mbit / s;
  • 12 – 450/100 Mbit / s.

The most high-speed are Cat. 9 and Cat. 12. Impressive speeds achieved by combining multiple frequency channels for parallel use. We decide that support LTE-Advanced is the second criterion to choose the best smartphone for Internet.

Samsung Galaxy S7 and Galaxy S7 Edge – flagships with excellent cameras

TOP 7 Best Smartphones for Internet: best LTE, Wi-Fi standards

Smartphones are not only demonstrate high performance, but differ in the support of modern communication interfaces. They are equipped with modules Wi-Fi 2.4 and 5 GHz bands working on protocols 802.11a / b / g / n / ac. Theoretically, the chipset is able to work even with Wi-Fi module 802.11ad standard, but there is no official confirmation. Depending on the region, it provides support for all current cellular standards, up to LTE Cat. 12/13 (up to 600/150 MB / s transmission / reception). LTE-U is also pending.

Xiaomi Mi Max – huge flagship

Electronics industry is an endless conveyor, which makes a profit by producing and selling a huge number of devices. New smartphones are released every week: a million similar models, but how to choose the right smartphone? How not to get lost and spend money wisely?

How to choose a smartphone: from what to start?

  • Price: It is known that expensive smartphones are better, but in 2016 midrange devices work quickly, have good battery and long battery life. If you do not plan to shoot 4K video, then middle-class smartphone the best option for you.
  • Year: no more than 12 months. The golden rule: you can buy an old smartphone only if it is the former flagship.
  • Popularity: One of the best options to choose a reliable smartphone – is to find the most popular. Smartphone is not high art, but a thing of prime necessity. High-power specification is not always a guarantee of quality: 90 megapixels does not help to make a masterpiece photos, a million cores – no guarantee of smooth scrolling in the browser.How to choose smartphone in 2016? Main errors

Bad idea №1 – trust “experts”

You can view the reviews of smartphone, but it is not always necessary to trust them. Perhaps technoblogger cooperating with PR expert of the company, and specifically praises the smartphone.

In addition, they usually spend 2-3 days of testing, which is not enough to understand how good a smartphone.

Bad idea №2 – buy a new model

New smartphone is the cat in the bag. Advantages and disadvantages will open only after the purchase.

There are no perfect smartphones in the world, every smartphone has a problem in optimization, interface smoothness, speed camera operation, overheating.

Bad idea №3 – focus on brandHow to choose smartphone in 2016? Main errors

If Samsung washing machine is working properly fifty years – that is no reason to buy a smartphone from Samsung. In 2016, 8 of the top 12 smartphone manufacturers are Chinese companies. Smartphones from China are cheaper therefore they are so popular.

Bad idea №4 – believe stereotypes about operating systems

Applications for Windows Phone (2016 – Windows 10 Mobile) are really small number, but it has all the necessary (social networking clients, instant messengers) and regularly updated. And forget the times when users of Android smartphones continually charge their smartphones.How to choose smartphone in 2016? Main errors

Two major mobile platforms (Android an iOS) are more and more common every year, so buying a new smartphone often depends from ecosystem. The owner of an old iPhone 5s with dozens of purchased apps and games, archive photos in iCloud easier to migrate to iPhone 6 Plus, then learn new Nexus device.

Android fragmentation is an endemic disease that affects almost everyone, if you don’t have a new Nexus running with the purest and latest Android version. Almost every device you can find at home has a version of Android and some even more than three years old.

What is Android fragmentation?

Everyone talks about the main problem of Android is fragmentation. Almost every model of Android smartphone has a different version of Google operating system.

Each device model has a version of Android, kernel version and build number. There are thousands of versions of Android, including adaptations of manufacturers and ROMs community. The range is very huge. Kitkat and Lollipop take about 68% of market, while the latest version Android 6.0 Marshmallow does not even reach 8%.

What is Android fragmentation and why it is important to know for us

Since Google makes Android source code free for public, called Android Open Source Project (AOSP), smartphone manufacturers begin to adapt the firmware and update their smartphones as soon as possible (usually first high-end devices) to the latest version.

Google is constantly improving its operating system and recently begin to release updates the patches for system from malware attacks. This is a necessary process.

The main problem comes from the manufacturers. Often mobile manufacturers, especially small companies, do not update their old smartphones.

There is no system that is 100% safe and every day it is necessary to cover holes that are discovered. Google knows and cares about it but for many manufacturers to upgrade devices is not so simple. They have limited resources or many other factors do not allow to do this.

How Android fragmentation affects us?

A wide selection has its good and bad sides. Each manufacturer try to add unique features and make their product a little more original. For example, Samsung has a panel of very peculiar shortcuts, Huawei has a completely different interface without application drawer and OnePlus has a dark theme for the setup menu.

The bad part is that not all devices are updated to the latest version of Android.

Android is an open source operating system, meaning that everyone can see how it works inside and manipulate it. Personally I think it’s a wonderful thing. The advantage is clear, personalization, but this also means diversity and fragmentation.

What is Android fragmentation and why it is important to know for us

Fighting with Android fragmentation

There are manufacturers that try to update their smartphones and tablets as quickly as possible. A good example is Motorola. The US manufacturer, owned by Lenovo, radically changed its policy firmware after passing through the hands of Google.

The company uses almost pure Android version only adds some applications such as Moto, FM Radio and its own camera application. This allows to release updates on all smartphones, even more than two years old.

Google knows that Android fragmentation is its Achilles heel and it is trying to rectify the situation.

What can I do against Android fragmentation?

How user can help with the problem of Android fragmentation? We take a passive role in this process, because all that we can do is to wait. But next time when you choose new smartphone you should look for manufacturer that cares more updates.

The increasingly rapid evolution of smartphones and their characteristics led to the fact that we have forgotten about some important technologies. Today we summarize 5 important technologies that are no longer used.

Projector

Samsung was the first company to integrate a project on one of its smartphones called Galaxy Beam. Launched in 2012, this smartphone was not taken seriously, especially for its enormous battery consumption, because the projector. The idea attracted several people at the time, but years later it has become clear that smartphones do not need a projector.

Removable battery

TOP 5 Popular technologies for Android that are no longer used

Except LG G5, the removable battery has disappeared from the high end smartphones. Why manufacturers do not use removable battery? Fast charge, wireless, greater autonomy, metal body – all these features are not available with removable battery.

Infrared sensor

TOP 5 Popular Technologies for Android that are no longer used

There are still many loyal fans of this function, but infrared sensor is slowly disappearing in Android. Infrared sensor was replaced by more attractive technologies such as WiFi, NFC or Bluetoot. TVs and other devices have also began to abandon this technology.

Physical keyboard

TOP 5 Popular Technologies for Android that are no longer used

The most important feature of the phone was the physical keyboard. But just for a couple of years a physical keyboard has been replaced by touch screens.

Blackbarry tried to continue to produce smartphones with physical keyboard, but it did not succeed, sales fell. Eventually there are no smartphones with physical keyboards.

Heart rate monitor

TOP 5 Popular Technologies for Android that are no longer used

There are few brands that continue to provide a sensor to detect the heartbeat on their smartphones. Smartwatches and fitness bracelets are the reason that heart rate monitor has become not relevant for smartphones.

About what other features we have forgotten?

Google and the clothing manufacturer Levi’s have introduced the first commercial product based on the Project Jacquard. Companies will offer a denim jacket for cyclists with conductive threads to interact with a smartphone. Thus jacket becomes a kind of remote controller.

Google had introduced Project Jacquard at its developer conference Google I/O 2015. This year’s event was used to launch the first commercial product. Google has agreed to a partnership with the clothing manufacturer Levi’s to release a product on sale next year.

New technology uses conductive material, which can detect touch, pressure and position of the hand near the textile fabric.

Google and Levi's introduce jacket with "smart" fibers

Today Google announced that the particular version of Levi’s jacket has an interactive material at the end of the left arm. Material includes a small Bluetooth sensor by which the jacket establishes a connection to the smartphone. Also jacket supports various gestures with which you can interact with certain apps. As Google has shown, you can change the volume of music in the usual movement up or down the sleeves of the jacket.

Given that Google has agreed with Levi’s, we believe that smart clothing will be sold like any other in the stores. Moreover, denim jacket can be washed, but before that you need to remove Bluetooth sensor.

In the near future Google will release a lot of similar clothing, including sports and business fashion. Developers from Google will provide a set of APIs that will need to be used to establish a connection between the clothing and smartphone.

The Levi’s jacket with jacquard technique of Google will come on the market from early 2017, but in the fall Google will release a “beta testers”. Information about the price is still unknown.
